I like this so far, the helmet especially is quite beautifully done. I think the main thing is adjusting the elements to emphasize the story that you’re trying to tell and where you want the focus to be. I think you could do this by adding more branches to the tree, creating leading lines to the center of the piece and maybe adding a few elements at the bottom of the painting. Large blank spaces are hard to ignore, but if you were to say, put a few pieces of armor from fallen foes, still dark but light enough to break up the black, then you could have them also creating leading lines back to the center.
Hi Bill! For your drawing and coloring I think you might find it easier to to think of the lighting earlier in your process. As your colors progress, it might also help to put more opaque colors over the drawing later. Lighting will also help with your focal point; currently his leg is fairly bright, and taking too much attention. Is that helpful?
You strike a nice balance here between the foreground figure, which is nicely detailed, and the background. But there could be a bit more detail in the background… for example, those flags are unconvincing to me. Also, the bird gets lost against the tree and isn’t entirely convincing in terms of anatomy. The patch of ground at the lower right somehow seems wrong in terms of its perspective. I think this could be fixed by bringing the value down somewhat… it is a little bright and distracts from the figure. Otherwise, I like the color and the relatively stylized figure.

Thanks Olaf,
Those are some good ideas worth exploring, thanks again for taking a look and your ideas.
