I remember seeing an earlier sketch of this on Reddit a little bit ago, nice progress so far, the face is feeling a little flat currently, the mouth and nose I think mostly, maybe if you focus a little on some plane changes around the edge of the face it might help there.
Thanks! Glad to see a fellow Redditor haha. Totally agree with the flatness, when I added more shadows to the nose and lips, the face no longer ‘popped’ that well against the dark background. Guess I would have to change the entire composition too, awesome feedback!
I like the color choices and the gold effect. The purple in the background is beautiful but I would try to increase the contrast between the subject and background. You could do that by lowering the background chroma in parts and making the subject lighter.
Since this is a portrait the thing which needs the most attention is the face. It looks to me like there is too much space between the nose and ear. You can define the forms of the cheeks and eyes better also. The pit of her neck is not in the center of her body, in between her clavicles, where it should be. You can also more clearly define the forms of the ear and clump the curls of the hair into ribbon like shapes.
I used my mouse to draw over so it’s not the most precise. In some parts I used flesh tones but I used big black lines to show what shapes I would define more. I don’t think what I did with the background is working out due to the limited color choices I have with this app so ignore that.
Wow incredible paint over, especially with such basic colors and tools! Those are some amazing points and I fully agree with all of them. I’ll have to keep honing my drawing and compositional value skills. Really appreciate at the solid advice and the illustrative paint over!
I like the strong lighting! This may be a nitpick, but the thing distracting me is how detailed the hair is just behind the ear, while the ear is very loose, with larger brushstrokes. Personally, I would reverse or at least equalize the effect.
Her arm feels just a little tacked on. You might include just a bit of her lat reaching around form her back to attach it, and then develop the values in the clothing more for more roundness.
I think I’m with Abbi about the ear-distance thing – it does seem too far from the eye. The main element jumping out at me is the lighting thought. The blue/purple just next to the bridge of the nose is so rich and bright that it’s popping forward and not receding to the background. At the moment it’s as though the figure is backlit, but there’s no rim light around the edge of the head, and no blue tones added to show that the environment’s light is playing upon the figure.
The lighting on the figure currently looks like the he’s lit from the front (where the camera is), so the shading in the background should probably have the gradient flipped – more shadow directly behind him? There’s a tiny rim light on his lips and nose which isn’t tying up with the light in his eye on the shading on his forehead, as though there’s a second source on the right of the shot. It’s a tricky one, there’s so much detail you’ve got a million elements to tie into the lighting! But I’ll be looking forward to seeing how it progresses…

I don’t know what reference you used but I was looking at this for ideas when I did the drawover. https://previews.123rf.com/images/chagin/chagin1307/chagin130700085/20751595-portrait-of-beautiful-woman-in-profile-on-a-white-background.jpg

Good luck.

Love the nitpicks, that’s a fantastic idea, especially since it’s dead center of the composition, that’s where the eye would gravitate. Thank you!
