This is a crop from a larger personal piece I'm working on, it's zoomed in quite a bit, mainly working on the hair at the moment, it's a little high contrast atm so I'm looking for ways to push and pull some things.
Awesome values and lighting! Right now it looks like the hair is almost luminescent. I think adding a few occlusion shadows here and there can help sell that its part of the character. Would love to see the rest of the image when it’s ready!
Thanks for the paintover! I’m definitely intending for a little bit of illuminated or glowing hair, you’re right about some more shadows to help make it part of her, I will be doing that and hopefully I can keep the glow as well, Thank you, I will post the rest of it very soon 🙂
The centerline of her body is on a sharp diagonal, while her neck is strictly vertical, so it doesn’t feel quite attached. A little work with the shadows will suggest that her neck is slightly twisted to connect her head to her body better.
Hi Ben!! This may still be a future step you just haven’t gotten to, but don’t forget to work on those edges, especially when you’re dealing with a subject so much lighter than the BG that few edges fall away due to like-values. Softer and variable edges will also help that hair feel like hair as it comes closer to finished.
Hey Sarah! I see what you’re saying, Thanks for the reminder, that’s something I always tend to do at the end because I always forget to do it during most of the painting =D
I like the bright areas of color at the edge of the shadows (especially on her upper arm). The shadows in the face seem a little overly purple to me (especially compared with the shadows on the arm and torso), but that may be a matter of personal preference. Looking forward to seeing more of this piece.

Good spot, that shouldn’t be too hard to fix, Thanks for the suggestion.
