I WOULD LIKE HELP WITH
I would like to know how this image is reading. I was looking for a mix of realistic rendering, and a painterly approach. What is working, and what is not working?

Firstly, I like the textures and I think the design is pretty unique.
I think the biggest thing that’s destroying the realism right now is the lighting. You have him standing in front of a setting sun, but then he’s being lit by a vague ambient light. That only really happens when you have an overcast day. So I would go with some pretty dramatic shadows and then back light him. Also I would show a bit more of the top of his head so that he feels like he has some volume, because his profile is making him look a little flat. Lastly, right now the structure of his shoulders feel very human and it’s kind of at odds with his bestial head, so I would consider giving him a big hunch back or something like that.
Hope this helps and keep up the strong work.
Aha! Thank you so much, yes that all makes so much sense, appreciate the feedback!
I think that with the unique head shape, you’re going to have to get the modeling with the light just right to make it read. The shoulder is working well but the head flattens out…I would recommend sculpting it with a kneaded eraser or similar and lighting it like in the image to help make the form more easily read. I think that’ll give more of a real feel to it that you’re going for.
Thank you for the feedback Sarah, really appreciate it!
