11×17 ink on illustration board. Jane (wearing an ape head for a hat) rescues Tarzan from the clutches of La. Not strictly canonical, as the very idea of Jane wearing such a thing is beyond the pale. But ;oved the image so much, I just had to see it.
Your rendering is beautiful. It took me a while looking at the image at thumbnail size to make sense of all the various limbs and sort out whose were whose. I wonder if you could play with values just a little more to separate the characters and make the image more “readable”.
Love your attention to musculature, especially Tarzan’s arm and leg. Very nice.
The arm/hand of the human observer looks a touch small, and the slight half-tuck of the hand into the robe is a bit confusing. It makes me wonder if the tuck is significant; a clue to this individual’s emotional state. Beautifully rendered as always.
Up until now, everything I’ve shown has been a previously completed piece of work. The insights and critiques have been good an useful. This is an actual work in progress, and not really something I planned, it just sort of developed as a casual project. The gesso on this panel is heavy and ridged, there is a streaked quality that I just have to accept. This began as a simple skyscape with a bit of land at the bottom. Then I decided I’d add the female figure. Not sure where this is going, but if it prompts and notions feel free to speak up.
I drew comics and graphic novels for many years, and started oil painting during the summer of 2016. I have attended workshops with Juliette Aristides and Noah Buchanan at the Bay Area Classical Artists Atelier.
